The formation of the Balerno and District Schools Pipe Band is an exciting new venture for pupils at Dean Park Primary.
Funding has been secured from the Scottish Schools Pipes and Drums Trust (SSPDT) to support the band’s development and instrument loans for the next 3 years. The band will include pupils from Dean Park Primary School, Balerno High School and other schools in the vicinity.
Experienced instrumentalists Scott Figgins and Graeme Peters have been appointed as Piping Tutor and Drumming Tutor respectively. Both compete with their own pipe bands at the highest level and we are delighted to have them on board.
Lessons will take place within the school day, with each session lasting 30 minutes. Pupils will be taught in small groups of approximately 3. Chanters and drum pads/sticks can be loaned to pupils and they will have the option to buy their chanter through the school if they wish to continue with lessons. Support to fund instruments will be available where required.
Once pupils have gained enough skills to be able to play their instruments in a larger group, a weekly pipe band practice will start. This will bring pipers and drummers together and allow pupils to progress from the chanter to pipes, and drum pads to drums.
It is planned that the Balerno & District Schools Pipe Band will compete in the Scottish Schools Championships in 2020, and in time enter other competitions including the World Pipe Band Championships. Experienced pipers and drummers can be also be supported to sit SQA exams in their instrument if that is their choice.
