On Saturday 1st December, the newly formed P6/P7 Dean Park girls football team, enjoyed their first match against Blackhall Primary at Malleny Park.
The girls’ after school football club was launched in September, run by our Health and Wellbeing Lead Mrs Smith supported by Kat Buckle, a Hearts Developer Player. It is open to girls in P4 to P7 from all schools in the cluster. For many this is their first venture into playing the game, whilst others already play at club level, however it was the first time they had played competitively as a team.
Their opposition, an experienced team from Blackhall Primary, were a tough prospect however this did not deter the girls’ in the slightest…..
“The game started with Blackhall showing their experience, passing the ball well, and going 2-0 up after 5 minutes, despite the heroic diving efforts of Darcy in the Dean Park goal. The first quarter ended 2-1 to Blackhall. The subsequent 3 quarters saw a turn in fortunes, as Laura moved into defence to shore it up and midfielder, Caragh, took a grip of the game – there was some nice link up play with Paige, Joy, Lauren and Robyn on the wings and up front; the two Sarahs made it difficult for the opposition to settle on the ball and Freya deserves a special mention for a twirl in the box. All the girls contributed well, enjoyed the game, running out eventual winners by 10 goals to 4. There were some superb goals from Robin, Paige (2) and Caragh (7). We’re all looking forward to the next game – bring on Barcelona!”.
What an achievement for the girls in their inaugural game! We’re sure it will be the first of many successes. Huge well done to the players and to all the coaches and parents who turned out to support the game.
