We were delighted to be asked by the Balerno Village Fairtrade Group to be part of a special event to mark the village’s successful Fairtrade re-certification. Balerno first received its Fairtrade status in 2013, and Dean Park has continued to play an integral part in the village’s work to raise awareness of Fairtrade.
On Saturday 8th December, the Right Honorable Lord Provost of Edinburgh, attended a small ceremony to present the Balerno Village Fairtrade Group with their certificate. Mrs Jean Barton, one of the original Balerno Fairtrade Founder members, received the certificate, with our Head Boy, Sam, and P6 pupils Sarah and Ellie and Balerno High School’s Head Boy and Head Girl in attendance.
Once the formalities concluded, the Lord Provost visited Fairtrade-connected stalls at the Farmer’s Market, whilst the children enjoyed some refreshments courtesy of The Mill. In a more informal setting, the Lord Provost re-joined the children and guests for some delicious Fairtrade cake and light-hearted conversation about school life and Fairtrade at Dean Park.
Well done to Sam, Sarah and Ellie for being such great ambassadors for the school and thank you to Lesley Henderson from the Balerno Village Fairtrade Group for all her organisational efforts. The visit was an outright success.
The Certificate, seen in the photo below, will be on display at Dean Park shortly. Our next Fairtrade school competition will take place early in the new term.
